Influential U.S. Republican Senator John McCain, known for his
anti-Russian statements, expressed his concern at the upcoming
training drills of the Russian military "Kavkaz-2012" and promised to
provide Georgia with "defensive weapons", RIA Novosti reports.
"I am very concerned about the blatant threat by Russia to Georgia and the
planned military exercises," McCain said.
The Tbilisi TV company "Rustavi 2" reports that he stressed that he
was confident in the Georgian people and that they would make the right
choices in the fall elections to the parliament in Georgia.
Earlier, Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze described the Russian
military training drills scheduled for September as "provocative".
