Tajikistan wants Russia to pay $250 million annually for military base

Tajikistan wants Russia to pay $250 million a year for leasing a military base, Kommersant reports on Thursday.

The Russian General Staff said that Tajikistan has over 20 unclear and unsuitable demands for Russia. Tajikistan wants free ground equipment and ammunition. Another dispute is presence of the 670th aviation group and 303rd helicopter squadron at the Ayni Airport.

The 201st military base is the largest Russian military base abroad. It has about 7,000 servicemen and enforces security at the Middle Asian Region. Negotiations of further lease have been ongoing since 2008. Lease expires in 2014.
