Russia believes that a settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict
can be reached only through peaceful negotiations, the participants in which
should abide by international legal norms and UN resolutions, the press-service
of the Council of Federation informs in connection with an alleged statement on
the topic made by Valentina Matvienko in Yerevan.
"The resolution of the conflict should consider the interests of
Azerbaijan and Armenia and be based on the principles of non-use
of force, respect for territorial integrity, human rights and the
rights of a people to self-determination. Therefore, we believe it is
important that the sides consistently go towards compromise, overcoming
the accumulated deficit of trust," the statement issued today reads.
Although admitting the important role of the intermediaries, "the
responsibility for a peaceful treaty lies with Armenia and Azerbaijan," the statement says.
