Tatarstan Mufti Ildus Fayzov was wounded in an attack on Thursday, RIA Novosti cites Albir Krganov, Chairman of the Central Religious Administration of Russian Muslims, as saying.
Fayzov and Yakupov were both supporters of traditional Islam, fighting against radicalism and extremism.
Fayzov’s Toyota Land Cruiser blew up at his house on the Street of Chitayev at 11 am today. The mufti was thrown out of the vehicle. Spokesman of the Russian Investigative Committee Vladimir Markin said that the mufti was hospitalized.
Another religious figure Valiulla Yakupov responsible for religious studies was shot dead at his house. The police believe that the murder has something to do with his professional activities. Kazan police structures have been mobilized to enforce security.
