Afghanistan passes chairmanship in ECO to Azerbaijan

 

Afghanistan will pass chairmanship in the Economic Cooperation Organization to Azerbaijan in August, Trend reports.

Shamil Aleskerov will replace Yahya Maroofi as the ECO Secretary General on August 13. ECO plans a summit in Baku in October 2012.

The 9th summit was attended by Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan in Baku in May 2006.

Azerbaijani trade turnover with ECO states has increased by 37.8% since 2011. ECO was founded by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey in 1985. The organization became a UN observer in 1993 and an observer at the Islamic Cooperation Organization a year later.
