UN observers leave Syria despite extension of monitoring mission

Half of 300 observers of the UN monitoring mission in Syria has left the state, despite extension of the mission, RIA Novosti reports.

150 observers left Syria on Tuesday night and Wednesday, an observer said in Damascus.

The UNSC extended the mission by 30 more days. It was to end on the night of Friday-Saturday.

The conflict in Syria has been ongoing for over a year, despite the peace plan of UN special envoy Kofi Annan implemented in mid-April. The UN says that over 16,000 people have died. Syrian authorities say that they face well-armed opposition.
