Russia says EU sanctions against Syria violate sovereignty

Russia will not allow checking of vessels sailing under its flag as stated in sanctions of the EU against Syria, RBC reports.

The Russian Foreign Ministry says that the sanctions violate the sovereignty of other states.

The Council of the EU passed the 17th package of sanctions against Syria on July 23, 2012. Russia is opposed to unilateral sanctions.

The new rules say that the EU will check planes and vessels suspected of carrying weapons and other banned goods to Syria. Assets of 26 people suspected of supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad were frozen. They were banned from visiting EU states. European companies were prohibited from cooperating with three Syrian companies.
