The treaty concluded in 1998 between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran on the transfer of prisoners is currently in effect, the head of International Relations Department of the Ministry of Justice of Azerbaijan Zafar Gafarov said, APA reports.
Z.Gafarov said that the majority of Iranians in Azerbaijani correctional facilities have been convicted of smuggling and selling drugs. He added that at the moment there are 160 Iranian prisoners in Azerbaijan. At the same time, according to Iranian data, there are 6 Azerbaijanis currently imprisoned in Iran. Gafarov stressed that Azerbaijan believes the actual number is 20 Azerbaijani citizens in pre-trial detention, as well as in prison. Since the signing of the agreement, the Iranian side has transferred to Azerbaijan 51 prisoners with Azerbaijani citizenship.
