President of Syria Bashar al-Assad has today made a written statement that the fate of the country is being determined in the struggle between the army and armed rebels, RIA Novosti cites Reuters. “The fate of our people and our nation, its past, present and future, depend on this struggle,” the statement devoted to National Armed Forces Day says.
Assad praised military personnel resisting “bands of criminals and terrorists.”
The agency reports that the Syrian president hasn’t made any public appearances for two weeks.
