The Abu Salem border post on the Egyptian-Israeli border has been attacked, resulting in 16 Egyptian soldiers killed, RIA Novosti reports.
Unidentified assailants arrived in two armored vehicles. They attacked the border guards with knives, then fired several anti-tank rockets. The clash happened east of Ash-Sheikh Zavid, 17 extremists were killed. Helicopters were mobilized.
The situation in Rafah normalized. The local control post connects Egypt and Gaza.
The posts were attacked by Al Jihad, supported by the population of the Sinai Peninsula.
Egyptian General Ahmed Yusef is supervising the investigation of the attacks personally.
Egyptian President Muhamed Morsi, Defense Minister Hussein Tantawi and other high-ranking officials will meet in Cairo soon to discuss the incidents. Morsi promised punishment for the attacks.
