Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will attend the Muslim summit in Mecca (Saudi Arabia) on August 14-15, as stated by Mohammadreza Farkani, Director General of the Directorate for International Relations of the Iranian Presidential Administration, RIA Novosti reports.
A consensus of Muslims leaders is expected to be the main topic of the summit.
Iran and Saudi Arabia experienced major tensions in March 2011, when Saudi Arabia sent forces to Bahrain. Iran accused Saudi Arabia of interfering in Bahrain and suppressing Shiite protests. Saudi Arabia accused Iran of attempting an assassination of the ambassador to Washington.
