Azerbaijani border guards have foiled an attempt to cross the state border. According to the press service of the State Border Service, an attempt to smuggl drugs from Iran to Azerbaijan by an organized criminal group near the village of Shahryar in the Bilasuvar region of Azerbaijan was disrupted, 1news.az reports.
A border guard unit found five armed men with large bales. After an attempt to arrest the violators the men opened fire on the border guards and headed back toward Iran. One of them was wounded by the return fire. The criminals managed to escape, using the rugged terrain and darkness. At the scene three bales of 66 kg of opium were found.
Also at this time a Mercedes passenger car with three men in it who tried to escape was discovered behind technical and engineering devices of the outpost. The men were detained. It was discovered that they are Azerbaijani citizens, residents of the Bilasuvar region: Eldar Jafar oglu Veliyev (born 1977), Rahib oglu Mailov Abish (born 1980) and Sabuhi Aligismyat oglu Tagiyev (born 1983), who were preparing to take delivery of the drugs from Iran.
The Border Guard Service is continuing its operational activities for the arrests of other members of the gang.
