Russian Defense Ministry denies draft increase

The Russian Defense Ministry has denied media report that it planned to increase the number of conscripts this autumn by 50,000, ITAR-TASS reports.

155,570 were drafted into the Russian Armed Forces in spring this year, 218,700 in the spring and summer of 2011, 135,850 in the autumn 2011.

Conscripts aged 18-27 serve one year in Russia.

Several media outlets reported earlier today that the Defense Ministry planned to increase the number of conscripts because of having trouble paying the wages of servicemen.
