Astana hosts international conference on nuclear disarmament

The Palace of Independence in Astana is hosting the international conference on nuclear disarmament, Trend reports.

Over 200 foreign guests from 75 states and over 20 international organizations, including the UN and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), are attending it.

Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia Valentina Matviyenko praised Kazakhstan for raising the topical issue once again.

Kazakhstan is hosting the international forum for the second time. President Nursultan Nazarbayev wants to stop nuclear tests, he closed the Semipalatinsk nuclear range, scrapped the nuclear arsenal and proclaimed Central Asia free of nuclear weapons.

Nazarbayev proposed setting August 29 as the World Day of Ban on Nuclear Weapons three years ago. The UN approved it.
