Russia urges lifting of Syrian sanctions

Russia wants the US and EU to lift anti-Syrian sanctions, said Moscow's UN envoy Vitaly Churkin at the Security Council, RIA Novosti reports.

Churkin noted that the sides reached consent on humanitarian reaction. Humanitarian organizations and the Red Crescent Society cooperate with the Syrian government.

Antonio Gutierrez, UN Commissioner for Human Rights, said that there were 229,000 refugees trying to settle in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. 72,000 have been granted the refugee status.

Yan Ellias, UN Deputy Secretary General, said that he took requests for establishment of buffer zones in Syria into account. Churkin shares his views. Churkin will discuss the problem at the new session of the UN General Assembly attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on September 26.

Foreign ministers of France, UK and Syrian neighbour states attended the session today.

France and UK proposed a meeting of ministers for economic development to discuss humanitarian operations.

The UN says 2.5 million Syrians need support. The Syrian government says that 8,000 people have died in 18 months of conflict. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius says 25,000 died.

Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Feysal Miqdad said that settling the crisis requires a dialogue with all parts of the society, Trend reports.

Miqdad says that Western states and the US are opposed to Syria to protect Israel. He wants Israel to return the Golan Heights and Lebanese territories.

Spokesman of the US State Department Patrick Ventrella said that consultations about Syria with Turkey continued.

Lakhdar Brahimi, Algerian diplomat, has become the new emissary of the UN and LAS for Syria, replacing Kofi Annan, who had proposed a peace plan in February. Foreign ministers of the UNSC members met in Geneva in June to discuss Syria, attended by Annan. Not a single point of his peace plan has been fulfilled.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and LAS needed time to find a replacement for Annan. Brahimi was to start work on September 1. He will work in New York. The UN will open a bureau for coordination in Damascus.
