EU tightens drilling requirements

The European Commissioner for Energy Gunther Ettinger plans to release
a new list of requirements for oil platforms in European waters,
Reuters reports, citing German media.

The requirements will include recommendations on emergency situations
and paying compensation. The list comes in the wake of a recent
accident in the Gulf of Mexico.

Ettinger said that the insurance model will resemble the funds of
nuclear power plant operators and will be taxed.

The Deepwater Horizon platform of BP sunk in the Gulf of Mexico on
April 22 near the state of Louisiana after a 36-hour fire. The
explosion killed 11 people. The oil spill has not been fully cleared
up, and has affected the states of Louisiana, Alabama, and
Mississippi.
