Gagauzia threatens to break away from Moldova

Gagauzia Governor Mihail Formuzal has threatened to break away from Moldova. Gagauzia is an autonomous region of Moldiva, according to the Constitution. The bill on special legal status allows the region to choose foreign self-determination, Gagauzinfo reports

Unionists willing to see Moldova and Romania as a single state planned protest marches in Beltsy in early August. About 4,000 people were involved in disorders caused by the locals and leftists. The marches were organized by Action-2012, supported by the National Liberal Party. The next marches were set for Kishinev for September 16. Unionists plan to rally 10,000 people.

Marches were held in Kagul and Beltsy earlier and resulted in disorders. Gagauzia will have parliamentary polls on Sunday.

Formuzal, leader of the Party of Regions, proposed making Russian the second state language of Moldova, scraping membership in the EU and concentrating on modernization.
