EU wants Serbia to recognize independent Kosovo

Serbia will be granted membership in the European Union in exchange for its recognition of Kosovo, which unilaterally proclaimed independence in 2008, President of the European Parliament Martin Schultz said, RIA Novosti reports.

Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic is on his first visit to Brussels. He has talks with President of the European Council Herman van Rompuy, EU Chief Diplomat Catherine Ashton and Commissioner for Enlargement and European Policy Stefan Fule.

Five out of 27 members of the EU recognize independence of Kosovo.
