UN and CSTO to enforce regional security after NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan

Gennady Nevyglas, Deputy Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), discussed the situation in Central Asia and Afghanistan with Oscar Fernandes-Taranco, an assistant of the UN secretary general for political affairs, and Elizabeth Spehar, Director of the European Directorate of the UN Department for Political Affairs, News Kazakhstan reports.

CSTO spokesman Vladimir Zaynetdinov said that the UN and CSTO need a common strategy in Afghanistan in relation to troop withdrawal in 2014. The CSTO, the UN headquarters in New York and the regional center for preventive security of Central Asia in Ashkhabad held a video conference for the first time.

The sides discussed the situation in Central Asia and peacekeeping. Miroslav Yench, head of the regional center for preventive security of Central Asia, noted the need for a global UN project to fight terrorism in Central Asia.
