133 out of 167 members of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in New York supported the candidate of Georgia - Deputy Chairman of the Constitutional Court , Professor Konstantine Vardzelashvili as member of the Committee on Human Rights for the period of 2013-2016, Georgia-online reports.
The committee consists of 18 independent experts in the field of human rights. Its main function – is to control the implementation of the obligations of the ICCPR participating states. Covenant participants regularly report to the Committee about compliance with pacts on human rights.
Citizens can also file complaint to the Committee about violations of their civil and political rights. Rotation of one half of the members of the committee takes place once every two years.
