US Secretary of State starts negotiations with Azerbaijani government in Baku

The United States' Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, arrived last night in Azerbaijan in the framework of her tour of Eastern Europe and the Caucasus. According to the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Philip Gordon, the visit will be short but packed. Ms. Clinton following tradition, visited the Şəhidlər Xiyabanı (Alley of Martyrs) memorial complex in Baku and laid flowers at the graves of Azerbaijani national heroes and at the eternal flame, reports AzerTadj.

After the ceremony she set out to meet the Azerbaijani president, Ilham Aliyev, and the Foreign Minister, Elmar Mammadyarov. "She will also have an opportunity to talk to young people about freedom of the press", - added Mr Gordon.

The government in Baku welcomes the visit of Ms. Clinton, declared the head of the international relations department of the presidential administration, Norvuz Mamedov, reports RIA Novosti.

One of the most important issues due to be discussed is ways of solving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The Azerbaijani press, citing the Russian co-chairman of the OSCE Minsk Group on Nagorno-Karabakh, Igor Popov, reports that representatives of the OSCE Minsk Group from the USA, Russia and France will meet the US Secretary of State during her visit to Baku.

After the negotiations in Baku Ms. Clinton will head to Yerevan.
