Iranian foreign minister visits Syria

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi will meet his Syrian counterpart Walid Muallem in Damascus today to discuss the meeting of Egypt, Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia in Cairo on Monday, ITAR-TASS reports.

Salehi proposed sending a group of observers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to monitor the new cease-fire. Arab and European states are skeptical about the idea because LAS and UN observers scrapped their mission. Violence was not stopped and has escalated in the last months instead.

Salehi said in Cairo that Iran wanted to end the conflict and initiate political settlement of the situation without foreign interference. Iran insists on stopping military and financial support of Syrian opposition.
