Russia and China want Palestine as UN observer

President of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas has Russian support to become an observer at the UN General Assembly, Russian representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin said, ITAR-TASS reports.

Chinese representative to the UN Li Baodong expressed support for Palestine too.

Abbas reminded that he will speak at the General Assembly on September 27 with an urge for recognition of Palestine as an observer. Palestine has support of many of the 193 UN members.

Only the UN Security Council may grant Palestine membership. The US and some other members of the UNSC declined the membership request in autumn 2011.

Russia, EU, USA and UN will meet at the 67th session of the UN General Assembly to discuss the Middle East peace process.
