The special inter-district court on criminal affairs in Aktyubinsk region sent the former mayor of Zhanaozen, Orak Sarbopeyev, to prison for 10 years with seizure of property, News Kazakhstan reports. The trial took place in Aktoba and the charge was voiced by judge Shapagat Alniyaz.
Sarbopeyev was accused of crime preparation and attempted crime. Sarbopeyev was found not guilty for receiving bribes.
Janaozen experienced mass disorder on December 16, resulting in the deaths of 16 people and over 100 injuries. Dozens of buildings and cars were burnt. Kazakh President Nursultant Nazarbayev imposed a state of emergency the next day.
