Iran calls for political solution to end Syria crisis

Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has called for a political solution to the Syrian crisis, saying Tehran supports dialogue between Damascus and the Syrian opposition, Hurriyet reports.

Salehi, who is in New York for the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly, referred to his bilateral talks with other countries’ officials in which he underlined the importance of Syria among current regional and international issues.

“At the moment, Iran as a country that plays a (major) role, and the chairman of the non-Aligned Movement (NAM), and also as one of the member states in the quartet contact group [formed] to solve the Syria crisis, enjoys a special position in resolving this issue and is therefore at the heart of political deliberations,” Salehi added on Wednesday.

He also pointed to his consultations with the Arab League chief, Nabil al-Arabi, as well as the UN-Arab League Special Envoy on Syria Lakhdar Brahimi, noting that Iran welcomes dialogue between the Syrian government and the opposition.
