Kyrgyzstan demands extradition of ex-president at UN

Kyrgyzstan demands the extradition from Belarus of its ex-president, Kurmanbek Bakiyev, the Kyrgyz Speaker of Parliament Asilbek Zheenbekov announced at the 67th session of the UN General Assembly, ITAR-TASS reports.

Belarus is an ally of Kyrgyzstan in the CSTO and EurAsEC, the speaker reminded, adding that he hopes to see Belarus fulfil its international obligations.

Zheenbekov reminded that Bakiyev is being charged for criminal, not political reasons.

Kurmanbek Bakiyev lost power after a revolution in April 2010. His relatives and high-ranking officials fled the country. Zhanybek Bakiyev, his brother and head of the State Security Service, was responsible for ordering fire to be opened on protesters in the center of Bishkek. 87 people were killed and hundreds wounded.
