Opposition starts protests at Kyrgyzstan’s Jalal-Abad

 

Over a thousand supporters of the Ata Zhurt oppositionist party started protests at the central square of Jalal-Abad in the southern area of Kyrgyzstan today, RIA Novosti reports.

They demand release of MPs Tashiyev, Zhaparov and Mamytov. The protesters blocked the Bishkek-Osh Highway for 5 hours yesterday. They threaten to block the highway again.

The three members of parliament will be accused on Friday.

Kyrgyz Deputy Interior Minister Kursan Asanov is on his way to settle the problem.

The deputies are suspected of a coup attempt and may get 12-20 years of prison. They may be fined or jailed for 3 more years for calls for changes of the constitutional system.

Opposition protested in Bishkek on Wednesday. It demanded nationalization of the Kumtor gold mine and tried to break into the parliament. Protesters threw stones at police officers. Tear gas ended the disorders. 12 people were injured during the protests. Ata Zhurt leader Kamchibek Tashiyev, leader of the party fraction in the parliament Sadyr Zhaparov and Vice Speaker of Parliament Talanta Mamytov were detained.
