Vlasov sees complicated situation in Dagestan

Alexey Vlasov, Editor-in-Chief of Vestnik Kavkaza, said that the situation in Dagestan is more grave than it is in other regions of the North Caucasus. He says that religious extremists and inter-clan disputes cause aggravations. Resolution of national, ethnic and clan disputes are the primary goal of Alexander Khloponin, Plenipotentiary Presidential Envoy to the North Caucasian Federal District.

He believes that the coming of Georgian Dream to power will nullify the Georgian factor.

The expert assumes that it is essential for Russia and Azerbaijan to form a political dialogue in security issues of the Caucasus and combating extremism.

Radical Islamism will lose its attractiveness, because Khloponin’s agitation targets young people. Finances for the region started arriving in 2011. Vlasov hopes that the federal district’s authorities will show capability of resolving socio-economic problems. Russian-Azerbaijani cooperation may contribute to the initiative, Vlasov emphasizes.
