Lakhdar Brahimi, a special envoy of the UN and LAS, is assisting development of a new peace plan for Syria which will introduce 3,000 peacekeepers, ITAR-TASS reports.
Brahimi has been discussing the new peacekeeping group last weeks. The US and UK will not send their observers to Syria. Peacekeepers will be formed using the Unifil principle. Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Ireland use the principle to monitor the border of Israel and Lebanon.
The Algerian diplomat continued consultations with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi in Tehran. They presented their proposals for the Syrian peace process to Brakhimi.
Brahimi agrees with the urge of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for unilateral cease-fire.
Iran’s plans will end military support of rebels, initiate a dialogue between the authorities and opposition and parliamentary elections.
Salehi said that Tehran was trusting the Algerian diplomat and wants to help him realize the peace mission. Brahimi will meet Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in Baghdad today.
