Lakhdar Brahimi to visit Moscow

The UN and LAS special envoy on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, will arrive in Moscow for consultations on Syria. This was announced by Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov. The visit is planned for next week. “We hope that the new special envoy of the UN and LAS, Brahimi, who will come to Moscow for consultations next week, will try to implement the Geneva communique principles in practice,” Lavrov told Rossiiskaya Gazeta.

Speaking about Bashar al-Assad, Lavrov noted that “all unreasonable accusations that he should be blamed for everything disguise a big geopolitical game. Bashar al-Assad is a guarantor of the security of the minorities which live in Syria, including Christians. At least one third of the population still stands for him as a person who won’t allow Syria to be turned into a state where minorities can’t live.”
