Turkey and Armenia should solve their own problems – U.S.

Turkey and Armenia should not involve other states in their bilateral disputes, the U.S. assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs said, Trend reports, citing CNN Turk.

"The problems between Turkey and Armenia should be solved by the two countries," Phillip Gordon said.

Gordon also said Turkish-Armenian protocols on establishing diplomatic relations and the March 4 adoption of a resolution recognizing the 1915 killings of Armenians by Turks as “genocide” by the Foreign Relations Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives were two separate issues.

The Swedish parliament also adopted a similar resolution on the “Armenian genocide.”

Turkey responded by recalling its ambassadors from Washington and Stockholm. However, the criticism of the resolution by the Swedish premier looks to have appeased Ankara, and its ambassador is expected to return to Sweden in the near future.

Gordon also expressed hope that the Turkish ambassador would return to the United States soon.
