The Muftis of Ingushetia have increased the bride ransom 3.5 times and the blood revenge ransom 10 times, RIA Novosti reports, citing a Mufti of the republic, Isa-Khadji Khamkhoyev. The recent Mufti conference discussed 3 topics: blood revenge ransom, rising bride money levels and persecution of bride kidnapping for marriage. 240 religious workers, imams and elders participated in the conference.
Khamkhoyev noted that the people attending criticised acts of bride kidnapping and introduced a special penalty for those who do not return the bride back home. The bride money was equal to 12.5 thousand rubles, which is the equivalent of $2000. A bride today cannot buy much with this money, which is why the bride money was increased to 40 thousand rubles. The Mufti also said that the former 100 thousand ruble compensation for blood revenge had been changed to 1 million rubles. Khamkhoyev emphasized the rising number of drunken drivers.
Ingush President Yunus-Bek Yevkurov met the Russian Premier Vladimir Putin in Kislovodsk on July 6th, telling the premier that in 2009-2010 they had reconciled 150 families. He noted that it was the republic“s citizens that decided to raise the bride money. The money will go to the bride, to provide the woman and child with clothing. He pointed out that bride money is not exactly an Islamic tradition and it will be studied further.
