Georgian former Interior Minister Bacho Akhalaya has been charged for excess of authority. He has been detained, but his lawyer David Dekanoidze has not clarified the place of detention.
Akhalaya resigned on September 20, 2012, after mass protests against tortures of convicts at the Gldan jail in Tbilisi. The minister left the country after the parliamentary polls on October 1 and returned on November 5. He was summoned for questioning by the prosecutors on November 6.
Akhalaya was heading the department for corrections in 2005-2008, he was the Defense Minister in August 2009 – July 2012 and Interior Minister since July 4.
