Georgian Defense Ministry officials may be detained

Georgian Chief Prosecutor Archil Kbilashvili said on Friday that former Minister for Defenses and Interior Affairs Bacho Akhalaya, head of the Joint Staff Giorgy Kalandadze and Commander of the 4th Brigade of the Defense Ministry Zurab Shamatava may get pre-trial detention, News Georgia reports.

The officials were charged with beating and abusing soldiers in October 2011.

According to a complaint, Akhalaya ordered a man to be beaten up at 5 am on September 13, 2011. Akhalaya, Kalandadze and head of the department for corrections David Chukua insulted the man and threatened to kill him, unless he gives them his expensive car.
