Dagestani leader wants more Dagestanis in Russian army

Dagestani Leader Magomedsalam Magomedov says that young people in Dagestan want to serve in the Russian army, but they have to pay bribes in order to do that, gain Moscow registry and serve according to the city’s quota. About 15,000-20,000 Dagestanis used to serve until 2010. Only 179 have been recruited this autumn, Izvestia reports.

Magomedov noted that the republic had high birth rate and the population will keep growing. Military service in Dagestan is an honour, gives good patriotic sense and consolidates people of various nationalities and confessions.

The Dagestani leader added that the republic will choose the best conscripts of the quota of 15,000-20,000 conscripts, but it should total at least 3,000-5,000. Magomedov hopes that Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu will take his idea into account.
