Mitt Romney’s defeat at the US presidential polls has provoked Texas, Louisiana, North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida to demand separation from the United States.
Most of them were outraged by what they call a violation of human rights by passenger inspections in airports.
The separatism petition needs at least 25,000 votes in order to be introduced to federal authorities. Texas got over 100,000 votes. It has a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy of the world. It is also the only American state that merged with the federation as an independent country. It left Mexico in 1936 and merged with the US in 1846.
Austin wants to separate from Texas and become part of the federation.
The previous attempt to claim independence was made by 11 states in 1960-1861 after Abraham Lincoln won the elections. US coherence was restored in 1865 after the Civil War.
