Georgian parliamentary opposition against mass amnesty, fearing growth of crime

Parliamentary minority says the mass amnesty project, which is prepared by the majority, is chaotic and will negatively impact criminal situation, Georgia Online reports.

"We are afraid of the scale of the project and a chaos. Such large-scale amnesty was implemented in Georgia long time ago, when Jaba Ioseliani (late Georgian politician in 90s, former criminal boss) declared a general amnesty, which brought bad consequences. We are talking about perpetrators of serious and very serious crimes. We do not know how many people are going to be released and how much it will change the criminal situation, " said a member of the minority David Sakvarelidze.

According to him, the opposition is not against humane bill, but does not agree with romeval of probation and conviction for thieves and fraudsters.

"It's a big responsibility, and in case criminal situation gets worse, after the adoption of this bill, the responsibility will rest on the majority," said the deputy.
