Russian parliamentary committee to raise conscription age

Vladimir Komoyedov (Communist Party), head of the parliamentary committee for defense, wants to raise conscription age to 19 years, RIA Novosti.


He explained that 19-year-olds had a better chance to end school studies.


The Kremlin and the Defense Ministry approve the idea.


Russian Minister for Education and Science Andrey Fursenko proposed raising the conscription age to 20 years in 2011. The Institute of Physiology of the RAE proposed the age to be raised to 19, Deputy Chief of General Staff Vasily Smirnov to keep it at 18.
