Bulgaria offers to open US military base

Bulgarian Defense Minister Anu Anguelov discussed opening of a US military base in Novo Selo, near Sliven, with officials of the Pentagon in early December, ITAR-TASS reports.

2,500 US soldiers serve in Bulgaria. Their numbers may double for 90 days. Bulgaria needs US troops to maintain security and share experience.

Bulgaria and the US signed an agreement to provide bases for American soldiers for 10 years in 2006. It may be cancelled unilaterally in a year after informing the other side. US soldiers may use the Ignatievo and Bezmer air bases and a warehouse at Burgas. The US has invested about $60 million in Novo Selo.
