Sides of Syrian conflict accept peacekeepers

Lakhdar Brahimi, special envoy of the UN and LAS for Syria, said in Damascus that both Syrian authorities and opposition welcomed peacekeepers, ITAR-TASS reports.

No agreement allowing the peacekeepers to enter has been signed so far, as stated by the envoy. Brahimi reminded that a peacekeeping mission would only be possible with permission of China, Russia, US, France and the UK as members of the UNSC.

Discussions of the peacekeeping mission in Syria have been held at the UN for weeks. The operation may involve 4,000-10,000 people, including monitoring, military and civil components.

Brahimi emphasized that the peacekeepers will have clear rules of operation.

The UN envoy says that the first step to settle the crisis is a cease-fire. Then, the country will have to form a transitional government until the parliamentary or presidential elections.

Brahimi reminded that he will visit Russia on Saturday to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss the Syrian dialogue and have a trilateral meeting with officials of the US and Russia.
