Russian and UN diplomats have closed-door talks on Syria

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and special envoy of the UN and LAS for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi have started closed-door talks on Syria.


Spokesman of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Lukashevich said that they will discuss ways to end violence in Syria, initiation of dialogue between its government and opposition, according to agreements reached at the axtion group in Geneva in June.


Lavrov believes that the international society should encourage dialogue, instead of provoking sides. He noted that the UN was putting effort into resignation of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.


Brahimi denied urges for resignation of al-Assad ahead of his end of terms of office in 2014. He expressed hope that the situation in Syria will be settled in 2013, before the start of 2014.
