Ukraine considers joining Customs Union

Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovych told Komsomolskaya Pravda that Kiev should consider adaption of laws to the norms of the Customs Union (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan).

The president noted that ideas on the adaptation were to be ready on December 18, 2012, but experts had failed to agree on all aspects of signing agreements with Russia, thus the visit of Yanukovych had been cancelled.

Ukraine is also expected to sign the association agreement with the EU at the end of 2013. Ukraine wants European integration. Russia offers it to join the Customs Union in exchange for cheaper gas and other benefits.

Valery Muntiyan, a Ukrainian governmental envoy for cooperation with Russia, CIS and the Eurasian Economic Community, said that Ukraine may join the protocol on formation of the Customs Union in July 2013.
