Up to 40 militant groups, including about 10 in Chechnya, 16 in Dagestan, 3 in Ingushetia, 5 in Kabardino-Balkaria and one in Karachay-Cherkessia, with a total of 600 members are still active in the North Caucasus, RIA Novosti reports.
391 militants, including 50 gang-dealers, were killed in 2012, 351 killed in 2011. 461 militants and their supporters were caught. 44 turned themselves over to the police.
Militants continue racketeering local businessmen and receiving finances from corrupt functionaries. 211 law enforcers were killed and 405 wounded in 2012.
