Armenian candidate for president Paruyr Ayrikyan told Speaker of Parliament Eduard Sharmazanov that he was shot in the shoulder by a man at a distance of 25-30cm the Street of Tpagrichneri in Yerevan at 11.30 pm. Head of the Presidential Administration Vigen Sarkisyan has already visited Ayrikyan and called it a political incident, Armnews reports.
Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan called it a strike on government and statehood.
The police and members of the National Security Service formed a joint investigation group to study the incident.
Armenia will have presidential polls on February 18. Campaigning started on January 21 and will end on February 16. Armenian Speaker of Parliament Ovik Abramyan said that the elections may be postponed by 2 weeks.
