Suspected plotter of assassination of Turkmen president detained

 

Abdumalik Abdullajanov, former Prime Minister of Tajikistan and candidate for president in 1994, has been arrested at the Borispol Airport in Kiev today, after 16 years of hiding from punishment for plotting an assassination of President Emomalii Rahmon.

Abdullajanov is charged with attempts of killing Rahmon and unrest in Khujand, the administrative center of the Sughd Region, on April 30, 1997. Rahmon was shot in the leg. Abdullajanov fled to the USA in 1998.
