Suspected shooter of Armenian candidate for president admits attack

 

47-year-old Khachatur Pogosyan, sentenced for drug-trafficking earlier, illegally present in Yerevan, and 41-year-old Samvel Arutyunyan were detained on February 7, suspected of shooting Paruyr Ayrikyan, leader of the National Self-Determination Party and a candidate for president, have admitted guilt.

Ayrikyan was shot in a shoulder at Yerevan center on January 31. He had been a notorious dissident in the Soviet era. He had lost USSR citizenship in 1988.

A special investigative group was formed by the police and the National Security Service to study the case.
