The leaders of Abkhazia and South Ossetia - Sergei Bagapsh and Eduard Kokoity - have expressed their gratitude to the Nicaraguan president, Daniel Ortega, for his country's recognition of their republics. They were speaking at celebrations in the Nicaraguan capital dedicated to the 32st anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution, ITAR-TASS reports.
Kokoity also thanked Russia for its part in ending the 2008 war that began when Georgian forces attacked South Ossetia. Apart from Russia and Nicaragua, the only two other states to recognize the republics are Venezuela and the tiny island nation of Nauru.
