Georgian former PM to be questioned about illegal payments

Vano Merabishvili, Secretary of the United National Movement of Georgia, former Prime Minister and Governor of Kakheti, and Zurab Chiaberashvili, former Healthcare Minister, will be questioned about the employment program of 2012 today, News Georgia reports.

The Ministry for Healthcare, Labour and Social Protection and the Social Development Agency initiated contracts on free-lance work for 21,837 people, hired to register unemployed people.

The free-lancers got no information or mission from the Social Development Agency. However, they were paid about $144 each, or about $3.157 million in total.

Prosecutors had 200 people questioned, who said that the free-lancers got money for promoting the United National Movement during campaigning.

Georgia had parliamentary polls on October 1. The Georgian Dream coalition of Bidzina Ivanishvili won the elections. President Mikheil Saakashvili’s United National Movement became oppositional.
