The Turkish government has announced the amendments to the Constitution


The Turkish government has announced a set of constitutional amendments aimed at further democratization of the country and acceleration of the process of its integration into the European Union, RIA Novosti reports.

Constitutional reform includes changes in 23 articles of the Turkish constitution, adopted after a military coup in 1980 and the possibility of impleading its organizers.

It implies reform of the justice system, particularly the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Council of Judges and Prosecutors, the ability of judging serviceman by civil law courts ; transferring of powers to the parliament, permitting it to institute legal proceedings on cases of dissolution of political parties , which now the Court of Appeal is invested with.

The Constitution, moreover, it is suggested to fix provisions on establishing an ombudsman institution, the recognition of the rights of state employees to conclude labor contracts and to strike.
The set is transferred to the opposition, which has previously announced that it would not support reform of the Basic Law. According to local media, if the constitutional amendments are not adopted by the Parliament, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), leaded by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, will hold a national referendum.
