New concept of Russian foreign policy released

 

The Russian Foreign Ministry has published a new version of the concept of foreign policy. It was approved by President Vladimir Putin last week.

According to the document, Russia considers the UN the center for regulation of international relations and coordination of global policy in the 21st century. Military intervention is unacceptable, because it violates the principle of sovereign equality.

The priority of Russian foreign policy is strengthening of the CIS and development of bilateral and multilateral ties with its members. The CIS is considered the basis for further regional cooperation of states with common historic heritage and has potential for integration.

Russia develops friendly ties with every member of the CIS basing on equality, mutual benefit, respect and account of each other’s interests, boosting integration processes. Russia is open for strategic partnership and alliances with CIS states.

The priority goal is formation of the Eurasian Economic Union to make maximum use of economic ties on the CIS space. The union will become an effective link between Europe and the Asian-Pacific Region.

Russia will support its citizens living abroad.

One of the main goals of Russia is neutralization of threats in Afghanistan, stabilization of the situation in Central Asia and Trans-Caucasus. The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is one of the most important elements in achieving the goal.

Russia continue playing an active role in political and diplomatic settlement of conflicts in the CIS. Moscow will take part in settling the Transnistria conflict basing on respect for sovereignty, territorial unity and neutral status of Moldova when determining the special status of Transnistria. Russia will support peaceful processes in Nagorno-Karabakh under mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group and basing on principles of joint statements of Russian, US and French presidents made in 2009-2011.

Concerning Georgia, Russia expresses interest in normalizing relations with the country in all fields Georgia is interested in, with account of political realities of Trans-Caucasus. Support of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as democratic states, strengthening of their international positions, maintenance of security and socio-economic restoration are some of the priorities of Russia.
